I wonder why this book isn’t as acknowledged as it should be? This book felt like a masterpiece of historical literature!! I spotted this cute polar bear cover at Foyles, not knowing the author is actually an Akutagawa prize winner! (* The Akutagawa prize is the most famous literary award in Japan.) Reading this book made me feel very intellectual, with it giving off a great atmosphere of pre-war and wartime Russia and Germany as well as an excellent analysis of humans from the polar bear’s point of view. All these complex topics were introduced in just the right amount and at the right timing…
Central London is sometimes inconvenient if you are looking for a nice cafe to work on your laptop. I really like to work at the cafe. The limited space and noisy background are always one of the biggest concerns. One day, I found this spacious cafe at the entrance of the hotel called the Hoxton near Holborn. Tables were big enough for your drink, food and laptop, there were even sockets for most of the seats. Buttermilk pancake tasted good. There is an open-kitchen restaurant at the back of the lounge area and they serve posh burgers for lunch (Tasted good!). It is a bit noisy…
In a city far away, bombs and assassinations shatter lives everyday. Yet, even here, hope renews itself, welling up through the rubble. Somewhere in this city, two young people are smiling, hesitating, sharing cheap cigarettes, speaking softly then boldly, falling in love. As the violence worsens and escape feels ever more necessary, they hear the rumour of mysterious black doors appearing all over the city, all around the world. To walk through a door is to find a new life – perhaps in Greece, in London, in California – and to lose the old one for ever. What does it mean to leave your home…
When I found this on Instagram, I pinned this spot straightaway on Google map! It’s like a hidden oasis in the middle of crowded London. Just a walking distance from famous touristy St.Pauls. It looks very gorgeous on photos, but it was surprisingly cosy. Very spacious and quiet in a good way. It would be a nice place to bring a book/laptop/partner to spend a warm afternoon with. I thought I could stay hours and hours sipping their flavourful coffee. Very friendly staff perfected coffee with cute latte art! (Staff told me it’s their new design, practising:-)) My Lorraine quiche tasted so good. As it always…
The reason why I planned a trip to Poland was because I wanted to visit Auschwitz. I read Hana’s Suitcase when I was in primary school, The Diary of Anne Frank in junior high school and Man’s Search for Meaning in high school. The more I read about the Holocaust, the more I wanted to know about it. I wrote my dissertation about war responsibility and apology for both my undergraduate and masters degrees’. I read so much about Germany during WWII and the post war period. Because it is tragic and sad history, I did not want to just passively read about it. Rather I wanted to see…
