(Book Review / 感想) Common Ground / Naomi Ishiguro

As a Japanese national who moved to the UK in mid-2019 to live with my British husband, Naomi Ishiguro’s Common Ground served to remind me of all those moments and things experienced in conversations with my British friends that they might never have even thought or known if they hadn’t talked about them with me.

The book – set in the early 2000s – tells the story of two young boys, Stan and Charlie. Stan lives in a suburban English town, and is struggling with his family and friends. Charlie, who is slightly older than him, is from a Traveler family. One day they happen to find each other at the local common, and a beautiful friendship begins to play out.

Indeed, friendship turns out to be the key to opening both their eyes to a new perspective on life. Stan and Charlie find each other somewhat different, but start learning about their respective lives as well as how the deeply divided world and society all around sees each of them. In the suburban town where the story begins, and in the later half of the book in the hustle and bustle of London, they both struggle and live in the same city, but each looks out on a very different world. This book vividly captures the so-called glass ceiling/wall inflicted by biased views and discrimination, whilst anchoring the narrative around how these two main characters grow up.

Ever since I moved to the UK, the surrounding political climate has continuously and unfortunately revealed its largely oppressive stance toward minorities. This includes both the obvious example of many discussions regarding Brexit, but also my personal experience with the local NHS GP’s registration form, where I ended up having to circle my ethnicity as ‘other oriental’ from the list of available options.

Whenever I talk about these little moments of ‘?’ in my London life, my friends will invariably react to me with a corresponding ‘!’, (have they ever even considered the possibility of the term ‘oriental’ still being used in an official document?!) reminding me that how people see the world seems to remain very different based on your background, culture, religion and many other elements that might potentially divide people, even if unintentionally. This book, then, was very empowering for me in its themes of believing in the power of friendships as well as how important it is to talk and unite together in overcoming these little ‘?s’ in this ethnically and culturally diverse society.

Common Ground’s central narrative was ultimately very heartwarming, even with these rather political themes, and the overall tone was refreshingly not very preachy at all! I ended up loving all the characters, and this contributed to me being able to enjoy this book very much as a classic coming-of-age novel too. Stan and Charlie will definitely stay with you, good friends, opening your eyes – even if just a little – on your own life.

(Lastly, as a big fan of her father Kazuo Ishiguro, it was almost impossible not to think about potential links to the writing of her Nobel-winning father, however… I would say Naomi Ishiguro is a uniquely great writer herself, and crucially, in her own way! I was very glad, through this novel, to read the voice of an author from my generation, who can not only write something this thought-provoking, but also craft it around such a readable story at the same time! )
